Over the summer a building project to construct our second Kuti, will be taking place as part of the regeneration of the forest at Sunyata. The new kuti (a small cabin for solitary meditation practice) will be constructed primarily with trees from the forest which has been thinned out to allow more light into the area. The project will be led by Sam Jensen who will be staying at Sunyata over the next few weeks. Sam, a qualified carpenter and forester from Norfolk in the UK will be using traditional craftsman’s techniques to construct the Kuti frame using only joinery and without the use of any steel brackets or nails. It will consist of a larch timber frame with wood prepared in the forest, straw bale walls and a sod roof and will incorporate both traditional and new methods of environmentally friendly construction. The kuti will be available both for monastics and lay people as a private retreat space in the forest. If you would like to volunteer to help out and or learn some traditional methods of timber construction then you can come along to Sunyata on Thursdays and Fridays (9am – 5pm) over the next 3 weeks. Booking essential via email: [email protected]. Lunch will be provided. Also, if you would like to support the building of the kuti then you can donate towards the project by following this link http://www.sunyatacentre.org/product/donation-to-centre/ .
